It all started at Hotel Kenilworth in Kolkata, where Shatbhi Basu, the queen of mixology, dropped a gem of wisdom during a training session that would shape my journey in the world of spirits. "If you are passionate enough, you can do anything (in the spirit world)," she said. Her words became the guiding light for what was to come. I found not just a mantra for mixology but a philosophy for life.

Although I first came to know about Shatbhi Basu quite some time ago on an ordinary day in front of the television, where she was skillfully crafting a cocktail. It piqued my interest, especially since I hadn't even heard the word "cocktail" before. Little did I know, this unplanned encounter would shape my journey into mixology.

Fast forward to 2016, I found myself at Hotel Kenilworth, wearing the bartender's apron and soaking in the knowledge from Shatbhi Basu who was then serving as the American Whiskey Ambassador for Jack Daniel's. The training she provided was nothing short of extraordinary, and her words echoed in my mind, "If you are passionate enough……” Her words stayed with me long after the training. Fueled by a newfound passion, I launched Cocktails India, my YouTube channel.

Like any creative venture, the initial excitement waned after a few videos. It wasn't until another training at MIX, Kolkata, a year later that the spark reignited. Armed with a deeper understanding and renewed purpose, I confidently delved into the world of mixology. Since then, I never looked back in my life. This time, I found myself confidently answering the questions I once stumbled over. Shatbhi Basu, the celebrity bartender, was not just approachable but exuded a childlike charm that instantly put me at ease.

During the "30 Best Bars India" event, where I served as a jury member among the 200, a unique moment unfolded. Despite not being on the top panel, Shatbhi Basu noticed my presence. In an unexpected and humbling gesture that spoke volumes, she took me to the front row seat alongside her. It was a moment of privilege and motivation, as she congratulated me for earning a spot on the jury, emphasizing the significance of the achievement. The event marked the inaugural season of "30 Best Bars India," and I felt fortunate to be part of this prestigious gathering. Thanks to Vikram Achanta, the “Tulleeho Man”, for this opportunity.

With her constant guidance and support, I transformed my cocktail creations from being appreciated by a few guests at Hotel Kenilworth to reaching every corner of the country through Cocktails India. Shatbhi Basu became more than a mentor; she became the catalyst for my success. Whenever I need advice, she's just a call away, a testament to the genuine bond we share. Her acknowledgment became a pivotal moment, a reminder that passion, when nurtured and celebrated, can open doors to uncharted territories.

Today, Shatbhi Basu stands not only as a mentor but as the architect of my mixology journey. With each cocktail mixed and every video shared, I pay homage to the spirited wisdom that set me on this extraordinary path that has propelled me forward in the ever-evolving dance of spirits, flavors, and endless possibilities within the mixologist's realm.

She always dreamed of being a Chinese chef, but destiny had a different plan. Life's twists led her to a different kind of kitchen – the bar, one where she stirs up delightful concoctions and flavors. Shatbhi Basu has garnered numerous awards and accolades throughout her illustrious career. A trailblazer in the world of mixology, she has been recognized for her outstanding contributions to the craft. From pioneering the art of bartending in India to representing the country on the global stage, Basu's achievements are a testament to her dedication and expertise. Shatbhi Basu is like a drink wizard with over 4 decades of experience mixing drinks. She's not just any bartender – she's also the founder of STIR – India’s first Academy of Bartending, Mumbai, a cool place that teaches people how to be awesome bartenders. For more than 25 years, she's been sharing her magical bartending skills there. Shatbhi Basu isn't just good at making drinks; she's inspired lots of women to become awesome bartenders too. She got a special award from the President of India and the Ministry of Women and Child Development for being the first woman bartender in India. She even made the first-ever TV show about cocktails in India called "In High Spirits" on NDTV Good Times. In 1998, she etched her name in history by designing India's first SS modular bar. Fast forward to 2013, and Shatbhi Basu added another feather to her cap as she became the First American Whiskey Ambassador for India, a role she adorned until 2016. Recognized as a stalwart in the alcobev industry, her contributions were celebrated with a Gold award by Spiritz Magazine, honoring her as a great "Friend of the Industry." Shatbhi loves to travel and check out the best bars and pubs worldwide, making her a true legend in the drink-mixing world. Cheers to Shatbhi!

I must confess, I borrowed Shatbhi Basu's "The Can't Go Wrong Book of Cocktails" from my bartender friend with the noble intention of exploring the secrets within its pages. However, in the unpredictable journey of life (and cocktails), the book found a permanent home in my collection.

Whether you're a seasoned bartender or just starting out, Shatbhi Basu is your go-to guide for advice and tips. Her welcoming nature creates an environment where everyone can comfortably approach her with questions about mixing drinks or navigating the dynamic landscape of bartending. Shatbhi's friendly approach ensures that everyone, from young to experienced individuals, can seek guidance without any hesitation. Cheers to a mentor who welcomes all levels of expertise in the world of mixology! So, the next time you cross paths with Shatbhi, know that your questions are not just welcomed – they're embraced! 🍸🌟

As the pages of my mixology story continue to unfold, one chapter remains etched in my memory with Shatbhi Basu. When I asked her, "How to be a good bartender?" she said something I can't forget: "To be a good bartender, you must first be a good human." Those words stuck with me, like a friendly reminder that being a good person matters as much as making great drinks. Here's to the mentor who infused magic into the art of mixing drinks, creating a story worth toasting to! 🍹
